Enduri pitha (Idli) ( ଏଣ୍ଡୁରି ପିଠା )

Ingredients :
1 cup urad dal (Biri)
3 cups rice
salt to taste
turmeric leaves
Water as needed
refined oil for greasing
HowToMake: How to Prepare:

Soak rice and urad dal in separate bowls for at least 4 to 5 hours. wash soaked item separetaly.These will be later ground together to make a batter which ferments for 6 hours or more. Grind the soaked items separately. Now mix the grinded rice and daal together into a batter. Combine the urad dal paste and rice paste together in a bowl and cover and keep aside to ferment overnight. Once the batter is fermented add salt to the batter and mix well. For making idlis, grease the Idli plate with oil(preferably your choice) . Heat the Idli pan with 1 cup of water and allow the water to boil.Pour 3/4 the ladle of idli batter to the idli plates and steam it for 10-15 minutes. If you want to check out whether it is done, just wet your finger and insert it in a idli and it is not sticky just switch off the flame and take the idli plate out .

Description: Enduri Pitha' a traditional delicacy of Odisha to showcase the medicinal properties of turmeric plant was prepared in most odia households to mark the celebration of ‘Prathamashtami'. This ritualistic festival is celebrated in traditional Hindu Oriya households to pray for long life of the first borns in a family. But this festival is traditionally attached to the ‘Enduri Pitha'. Prathamastami is an Odiya festival where people pray for the long life of the eldest child. During this pooja, the eldest child gets new pair of clothes which usually comes from the maternal uncle's side (Mamu Ghara) and also sits in the pooja.
